This adorable blow fish is the largest of the “Kamifusen” paper balloons that we offer.

To inflate, we would recommend simply blowing carefully through the small hole or alternatively use a straw. To use these as decorations we recommend inflating first and use a bent paperclip, gently insert into the hole and tie with string to create an eye-catching feature.

These paper balloons have a unique quality of being able to be deflated to their flat state and reused again and again.

We are proud to source these from the only remaining paper balloon manufacturer in Japan which has been in family operation for over 100 years.

  • DESIGN / BACKGROUND

    Celebrating the tradition of papercraft in Japan, these handmade balloons (Kamifusen) are appreciated by adults and children alike. They originated as part of a children’s game in the 1890’s, the objective to inflate the balloon and keep it afloat – known also as the game of “keep it up”, with the unique quality of being able to carefully deflate and reuse again. These were crafted by hand when the sea was too rough to rely on fishing in the winter months, for additional income in the coastal town of Izumozaki, creating a legacy of a cherished and timeless toy.

    These gorgeous hand-crafted balloons can be appreciated in the more leisurely pursuit of home & garden decoration by stringing them together. They will brighten up a child’s room, as well as adorn a room for celebration or simply add a unique decorative touch. You can also send these inside a card for a loved one as a surprise gift.

All Fabric lampshades are currently made to order in our studio in the South of England, and despatched within 6-8 weeks. If you have a bespoke enquiry please do not hesitate to contact us, using the contact form.

 

*Our Sougara albums are handmade in our bindery in the South of England. Our lead times may vary, however we aim to despatch albums on pre order within 2-3 weeks.

Is this a gift?

Select this option if you are sending directly to a loved one. We will carefully package the item/s in bronze tissue, and one of the Esmie team will handwrite your message in one of our notecards.
